Buyani Dumakude – Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Officer Inland – SHEQ Division.

Celebrating our brand ambassadors – iServe with pride experiences.

How long have you been working at Servest?

I joined Servest in February 2019 as an intern, so I have been working for the company for two years now. I was given the opportunity to gain work experience in all of the departments at Servest including the Landscaping and Turf division, over a three-month period.

I also had an opportunity to work in the SHEQ department where I was introduced to key processes and systems. Two months after the internship programme had ended in January 2020, I was approached by the SHEQ department for an interview to potentially fill a SHEQ Officer vacancy. I think it was my never say no attitude, the passion I displayed, and my willingness to learn that made me stand out among the other interns.

Please tell us what your typical day looks like?

A typical day starts with me checking and responding to e-mails, I then plan my weekly inspections, followed by monitoring SHEQ inland activities that need tracking.

What do you enjoy the most about working with colleagues at Servest?

What I enjoy most is that at Servest everyone is equal. My colleagues are welcoming and humble.

A lot has changed in our working environment since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country last year, what have been some of your biggest learnings from the pandemic, especially relating to your relationship with colleagues, and to the company values?

The biggest lesson I learnt from COVID-19 is that working from home can be as effective as working in the office.

If there was one thing that must never change at Servest, what should that be?

At Servest, everyone is treated equally, and the word “employee” is never used, but rather “colleague”. I hope that Servest never changes this practice.

What do you do to unwind?

I enjoy watching movies in my spare time.
